Plaques

We're talking about plaques here, the good kind, not the bacteria-containing substance that develops on your teeth. Plaques are plates that are made in honor of a person or a place, such as a building or an association. Plaques may be commemorative items celebrating the life of a deceased person or they may be awards handed down to individuals, as a much higher token in place of a trophy or an award. Plaques usually bear text explaining the honor, the date awarded and the person's name.

Plaques In The UK

Blue plaques in the United Kingdom started the contemporary tradition of handing down plaques, as blue plaques were attached to buildings to commemorate special events that happened in specific places. After the first World War, British officials began awarding bronze memorial plaques to surviving families of killed soldiers. These plaques were originally designed by Edward Carter Preston, a noted sculptor and medallist. To this day, plaques in the United Kingdom and throughout the world remain a fitting way to say goodbye, to say congratulations and to generally bring about good cheer.

Types Of Plaque Material

Plaques can be made from various types of materials, including metal, brass, bronze, stone, ceramic and wood. Wood plaques look very professional and though they may be less expensive than other types of plaque material, there are still some very pricey designs made of solid wood. There are also types of acrylic and wood plaques as well as stained blank wood plaques. There are also blank wood plaques you can purchase, which feature a quality crafted piece without any specific text. This may be desired by people who want a simple plaque for decoration or for offices, where names can be easily attached and remove onto plaques. (You know, in case you're fired and replaced in a day) There are other designs available for acrylic award plaques and glass plaques, which are very beautiful and for truly unique occasions.

Plaques For Every Occasion

Plaques are not only used for honoring the deceased, though memorial plaques are a wonderful way to pay tribute. There are also address plaques for professionally identifying homes or offices, award plaques and wall plaques for recognizing achievements, manufacture signs labels and plaques, retirement plaques from companies who want to send off a retiree with a fitting tribute (and hopefully a penchant plan) and name meaning plaques, that are an excellent piece of decoration and can enlighten guest as to the meaning of your name. (Even if it's just Bob)

Plaques not only honor a person's memory, they also can be used to make a person feel good in the here and now!
