Posters
The aim of a poster is to convey a powerful idea to others. Physically speaking, posters are little more than large pieces of printed paper that are best suited for a wall. Posters contain graphics and sometimes accompany text that are designed to be eye-catching and provocative. Posters have been used for many different purposes - some noble, some less than noble and far more often, some just for advertising. They can be used to promote films or musical events as well as by political protesters or even by propagandists.
A History Of Posters
Posters, in basic concept if not printing technology, have been used throughout the history of man. Government proclamations were made known by posting formal announcements and even the plays of Shakespeare were “advertised” by way of posters. It was only when printing technology improved, allowing for cheap mass production and new printing techniques, that the revolutionary age of posters had begun. This period could be traced back to the late 1700's when lithography was invented, followed by chromolithography. These processes allowed not only mass production of posters, but also the use of color.
By the 1800's, posters were common place, with notable artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Jules Chéret making mere “posters” into vibrant works of art. Painters would often create posters as a means of revenue and soon Paris became known for its “art galleries” of the street. As time went on, theater stars began to select their favorite poster artists for original works. By the late 1800's posters were no longer considered just promotional works or official announcements but were esteemed as as a new medium of art. Though originating in Europe, eventually posters came to America, though they quite never reached the same level of artistic respect.
Posters Today
What kind of posters are popular today? Though usually not equated with poster art, there are many artistically designed movie posters that are sold by merchandising companies as tie-ins to major movies. Motivational posters or inspirational posters may feature photographs of inspirational personalities such as political figures, athletes, health practitioners or other celebrities that many find inspiring. Propaganda posters are inspirational art posters that serve a political, religious or moral agenda. Animal posters are an adorable choice, while vintage posters bring back a nostalgic feeling. Wanted posters are parody posters that give your mug a notorious look and may let you choose your own “crimes.” A wanted poster can be purchased or generated online for print-out. There are also custom posters if you can't quite find the perfect graphic and text combination.
Finally, there are poster frames to consider. A poster can be worn out if they are constantly taped or tacked to a wall and a poster frame can preserve the artistic work for a lifetime, like all great art deserves.
